People across Devon and Torbay will benefit from more local training opportunities following confirmation from the UK Government that the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority can now take responsibility for managing Adult Skills Fund provision in the area. This will enable the Authority to work with training providers to shape and commission learning opportunities that better meets local needs, supporting the Government’s ambition to give regions greater control over decisions that affect their communities.
Through courses supported by the Adult Skills Fund, residents will be able to access training and learning opportunities that help them gain new skills
The fund is designed for learners aged 19 and over, giving them the skills they need to step into employment, progress their careers, or take their next step in learning.
The fund also provides those aged 19 to 23, with a fully funded route to their first qualification, backed by guidance in essential skills like English, maths and digital literacy.
From hands-on technical skills in construction and engineering, to essential skills like English, Maths and Digital, local areas can use the fund to ensure there is an offer for everyone ready to take that next step.
By bringing decision making closer to local communities, Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority will be able to shape a skills offer that reflects the real opportunities available across the region and helps residents build successful futures close to home.
The funding will help create a stronger pipeline of skilled people, giving residents the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications and helping businesses access the talent they need to drive future growth across Devon and Torbay.

“Handing control of Adult Skills Funding to Devon and Torbay Combing County Authority means decisions will be made by those who understand local needs best.
“This is part of a wider drive to build a more flexible and reactive skills system that truly works for learners and employers alike.”
The Government is reforming the wider skills system to ensure it delivers for everyone involved, including changes to the Growth and Skills Levy to give employers greater flexibility over how funding is used and introducing more flexible apprenticeships in priority growth sectors such as construction, engineering and digital technology.”
